Situation

We received a phone call at 1900 hours on a Friday night from our client in Bristol to advise us that there was dirty water backing up form the drains into the building, overflowing into the toilet sinks on the ground floor and coming out into the main reception area.

Upon investigation with site staff, it appeared that the issue had been toing an froing all week and that pipework in the basement car park required rodding however due to the age of rodding access points, no-one would remove them in case they failed and could not be replaced without a specialist welder.

Our Action

We immediately instructed our security personnel to attend site to provide additional support to the security on site.

A senior manager was dispatched to manage the situation and whilst en-route arranged for a drainage company to attend and a welding company were put on standby should the rodding caps need welding.

Hours the building was back in full service

Whilst awaiting for the drainage contractor to attend, our security personnel managed diligently to contain the water, preventing it from seeping into the lift shafts, closed all the toilets in the building, liaised with the remaining tenants and cleaned up as much of the overflowing water as possible.

Upon arrival our Senior Manager, instructed the remove of the rodding plates, creating a large discharge into the basement car park. Over a number of hours, multiple blockages were cleared and then our professional cleaning team attended to clean the hazardous waste from the car park and deep clean the affected toilets and reception area. Within 6 hours the building was put back into full service for the client.
